1. features adelina larsson dancing.

shot in a black box studio as an exercise in handheld filming, relationship between camera and dancer, and editing to create the choreography.

  2. spain in january...

still/live has been invited to Video Dansa for their festival in january 2009.

now to convince the ozco, or someone, to pay for the flight so i can go and install it.

i’ve never been to barcelona. would be a lovely expansion to the break i’m getting after the exams finish this week. this week. can’t wait.

will be heading to sydney to see the age i’m in, which was at the sydney festival early this year. then down to melbourne to work on anamnesis (that’s a link to the development blog for a new dance film).

so many good things to do during these holidays.

  5. a minor success

adelina and i received word that we were successful in applying for funding from ArtsACT.

the funding is for stage one of a screendance project, which will involve us working from January to June in 2009 on developing material and examining our individual and joint practices.

the project is titled (in the grant - but perhaps will change) It’s impossible to walk without taking your feet off the ground

as part of the project we will be keeping a blog to track the process and invite responses and feedback… details coming.

  6. user ratings on IMDB

while wasting some time clicking around this arvo i noticed that some people have rated Ready on imbd.com. (Ready is a short dance film i made recently)

    8 people.

    all men.

how funny. i wonder where these 8 people saw it? possibly at a festival but probably just via vimeo or my website.

still, it takes some effort to rate something on imdb. you need to register for starters, then you’d have to look it up. and although it’s a small pool, i’m pretty happy with a 9.1/10 user rating. :)

  7. This is another 2 second screendance work. It was made in 2006 when Simon Ellis and I were on a residency at PICA (also with Paea Leach involved). This was an attempt to convey explicit narrative in 50 frames - with a little help from the title.

    Plenty more at microflicks.net
    Uploaded to Vimeo group Screendance.

Dancer Simon Ellis, David Corbet, Paea Leach.

  8. i set up a group for screendance on vimeo. hoping people will add what they consider to be screendance. there are a couple of groups for video dance already on vimeo. most are as empty as this one.

upload if you’ve got something to contribute.

  9. imdb, is it for you and me?

i’ve submitted three of my short dance films to the imdb website. after a couple of revisions and proving (via websites) that my films had been shown at film festivals they accepted them. it wasn’t completely straightforward, but it wasn’t difficult to do.

what i find surprising is how few dance film titles are in the database. when you click on that link you’ll see that there are 1,595 titles with the keyword of dance - so what am i talking about? well… Get Smart is in the top 20 of that list (sorted by date), so it’s not a particularly accurate way of finding dance based films, more for finding films with dance in them i reckon.

having said that, The Rain and Car Men (both shown at Cinedans earlier this month) were both listed. the Cinedans (and audience) award winner Dance Like Your Old Man is not listed, nor are many others that showed.

so i decided to add a new keyword of screendance to the imdb database. so far there’s only one title (hehe). i hope people add their works and use the keyword - perhaps this can also help contribute to defining the genre (although the listing criteria for imdb means that many screendance works wouldn’t get a guernsey).
